did 2011 really happen, my year sort of

2011 was a blur for me as I was deep in momhood, teaching here and there, doing a few projects and trying just to live and enjoy it all. Though I feel I was out of breath and rushing around fueled on caffeine and the unknown most of the time. I don’t write much on this blog and have been slow to enter the 21st century with all those tweets and thangs. That is all about to change in 2012, but before I promise or hope for lots of change in the new year here’s a few things I loved and learned about myself in 2011; this will be my last and longest post ever here:
1. Emi; our daughter is 14 months and a bundle of love, love, love. She was photographed in the overalls by my old studio neighbor linnea osterberg. She is funny and lovely and sweet and…let me stop gushing now.
2. Postpartum depression sucks; it happened and I’m moving forward slowly.
3. Teaching keeps me sane. I adored my students all year. I’ve always loved teaching; but being so busy with a baby, teaching gave me an island of six hours each week to spend sharing ideas about design and witnessing students learn to love and use type; what a pleasure. I met Gaby too, (photographed with the lemons up there) and am watching her career take shape, thanks for the summer Gaby and photographing my work with a baby crawling around at my house! I promise to get the new site up soon.
4. Working with Marcella Robin; Marz is the shit. She is the most creative person I know and is really going to change the wedding cake world, watch out!
5. I need to launch the new site and I_Do_Type! More later!!
6. Letting go and downsizing. In 2010 I gained another office to use as a meeting room and once Emi was born I was rarely at the office at all. A total waste of money and space. So, I downsized back to my lil’ space and gained a mate; the very talented letterer and artist/designer Krista Messer :)
7. Stay focused and breathe deeply. Laugh a lot; this has not changed.
8. I had to get glasses, not for fashion, haha!! In August I learned I had a horrible quickly growing cataract that left only a few months on my lens, I had no idea, very scary! I had the cataract removed with a new lens replaced a week into school, which was not fun. So now I wear glasses, ahem.
9. Rekindle friendships, yes I did it with my best girl in Cali.
10. That’s it, I think at least for now. I’ll be in touch when the site switches over, here’s to crazy creativity in 2012, XO

Marcella is a pastry chef here in Portland. She is a good friend of mine and we’ve collaborated on many projects before. Though this project was extra special as it was to brand her new business (though she’s been baking and making for years). I created a typographic mark that evoked her personality, product and unique slant in the cake business. Her cakes are extraordinary. With her degree in sculpture and talent for baking she has created a cake form that evokes painting with food. This is the only way I can describe it! Those decorative elements are not painted or placed on they are baked in. Graphic, simple, without unnecessary ornamentation. Much like my work! We have big collaborative plans. Imagine invites and cakes that go hand and hand! Check her out!

I’m still here!

Yes, I am. I’ve taken some time to spend with my girl and her poppa. I’m still at the office taking it a bit slow. I’m also teaching Portfolio at PSU and loving my tiny class of lively talented students. I finally got my dream camera and tested it out on E; I love this shot. I gasped because her little finger went right to the lens! She is a funny girl. I told myself I wouldn’t be the mom to post photos of her but as she is the focus of my world I thought I would share.
Of course there is still DESIGN for me! I’m a bad blogger and get overwhelmed with keeping up with this blog, I admit. I just completed a project for my friend Marcella that was a labor of love. I’ll be sharing that next. Marcella is out of control creative and our working process fits so well together. She makes cakes, plans parties, cooks delicious things (and I eat them!)
I’m planning many things; including a new site in the works that I plan to have up in Fall. Of course I am still here! Please say hello clients and friends and wave if you pass my window in Portland. My best, P!
